1221: Forest consultation

This paper is summarised from the Defra/Forestry Commission consultation ‘The future of the Public Forest Estate in England’. The consultation ends on 21st April 2011

Year of Publication2011

It is an anomaly that the Forestry Commission is currently the largest operator in the sector that it also regulates. The move away from the Government owning and managing woodlands in England would provide a greater role for civil society, businesses and individuals but the Government is determined to secure the future provision of public benefits.. The consultation invites views on the criteria for deciding which parts of the estate fit within different models, the principles guiding each model, the safeguards for providing public benefits, alternative approaches and the role of the Forestry Commission.
