Those working in the sector will need to have a mix of high-level technical skills, business management skills and skills relating to managing change. Over 194,000 new entrants are needed England over the next ten years. There is a need to develop programmes for continual professional development and to introduce systems to record professional and skills development and lifelong learning. 66% of businesses are unaware of apprenticeship programmes. Clear career pathways are needed and the sector needs to promote its image to entrants of all ages, women and career changers. European Rural Development Programmes should be adopted by Government for mainstream skills programmes
