This paper is the taken from the conclusions and recommendations of the 2009 Frank Arden Memorial Award Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust report, ‘Science and Technology for Farming and Food’ by Lindsay Hargreaves. Earlier papers have covered more detailed aspects of the report.

Re-invigoration of the science and farming partnership is vital but it will only succeed if the outcomes are relevant, achievable and commercially sustainable. Farmers must seek more involvement in technology development, lobby for agricultural science and biosystems engineering to be given a higher priority in higher education, look for training courses to give their science knowledge a top-up. Guidance systems and telematics are vital so farmers need to push for the establishment of a countrywide, robust signalling system.
