Outdoor recreation

Countryside recreation and outdoor pursuits are major features of leisure and sport in the UK and involve activities on both land and water. Outdoor recreational activities include running, walking and rambling, sailing and canoeing, paragliding and hang-gliding, caving, climbing and mountaineering, and fishing.

Many outdoor activities are organised under their respective governing bodies (e.g. the British Canoe Union or the National Federation of Anglers) and pressure groups (e.g. the Ramblers Association). The Countryside Recreation Network promotes research, information exchange and good practice between the numerous bodies involved in access, sport, toursism and leisure in rural environments.

Green exercise and all-ability participation is encouraged through such agencies as Natural England, the Environment Agency and the Forestry Commission, for the benefits offered in ;physical and mental health and well-being.

The Openfields library holds materials related to recreation management, health and safety, leisure and tourism enterprise, and usage statistics.
