1356: Water and food security
This paper is taken from the International Water Management Institute report ‘An Ecosystem Services Approach to Water and Food Security’
Year of Publication2011
We need to value ecosystem services so that we can understand trade-offs, manage agriculture to produce food and deliver services for long-term food security, collaborate, manage rainwater at river basin level, and use Integrated Water Resources Management. We can increase water productivity in crop systems with targeted surface and groundwater management to bridge dry spells, careful nutrient management, innovative field practices and adapted cultivars. More ecosystem services could be provided by crop-tree-agroecosystems. In livestock systems targets are improving animal health, using more waste products, selection of fodder crops and grazing management.
