1448: Countryside: striving for a more balanced approach
This paper has been prepared for RuSource by Vernon Hazel FRAgS, MRAC. It gives an interesting retired planner’s viewpoint of the historical context and some possible ways forward for our countryside

Among the suggestions made by a retired planner are a broadly based Rural National Plan, to not devolve decision making having a wider than local impact down to a level where vested interests dominate the process, to find more beneficial use for underused land in proximity to urban centres, to encourage the use of older breeds and traditional forms of management for the maintenance of a diverse and evolving countryside, to restore the words ‘countryside for its own sake’ within Government guidance, and to identify and remedy deficiencies in the availability of advice on rural issues to central and local government. of the historical context and some possible ways forward for our countryside
