1157: Business support for farmers

This paper is summarised from ‘Business support for farmers: an evaluation of the Farm Cornwall project’ by Gerard McElwee, Nottingham Trent University, and Ivan Annibal, Rose Regeneration Ltd, Lincoln.

Year of Publication2010

Recognising business opportunities and planning to exploit them have become major requirements for farmers. Co-operation and networking skills, innovative abilities and risk-taking are important as are business planning, monitoring and reflection, team-working and leadership. The Farm Cornwall project encompasses an integrated approach to providing business support including sign-posting specialist advisers, the facilitation of training, assistance with major grant applications and help in accessing sources of social support. Replication of such a scheme across other rural regions is desirable but would require an appraisal of the efficacy of rural business support.
