1313: New uses for grass
This paper is summarised from ‘The grass is greener’ from the Teagasc publication T Research
Year of Publication2011
High yields can be achieved from grass to provide renewable energy, chemicals and materials without the need for new farming practices. Silage is better than fresh grass because it can be available all the year and has more predictable quality. The separated solid fraction can be used for thermal insulation, particleboard, bio-composites with polymer resin especially for the motor industry, as a soil-less growth medium, for paper and as fuel. The liquid fraction contains lactic acid, a major platform chemical, amino acids, and biogas
