There were 151,856 hectares dedicated to fruit and vegetables (excluding potatoes) in the UK in 2010. The area of pears increased by 11% over the year. Overall vegetable production was up with the largest increases for winter cabbage, asparagus and leeks. The UK produces 57% of its vegetables but only 12% of its fruit. Vegetables increased 14% in value over the year with onions up by 122% and asparagus up by 40%. The value of home grown fruit increased by 2% - pears went up by 52% and plums by 17%.
