The most important improvements to carbon storage could be made by reducing the erosion and degradation of peatlands, converting arable land to permanent grassland where appropriate, reducing soil disturbance when managing and restoring habitats, reduce fertiliser leaching into water and by reducing waste. This is a rapidly developing field and large uncertainties remain.
