1482: Food security and climate change

This paper is summarised from the recommendations and conclusions of ‘Achieving food security in the face of climate change’ the final report from the Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change chaired by Sir John Beddington.

We need a sustainable global food system with climate-resilient agricultural production systems, efficient use of resources, improved marketing and distribution infrastructure, low-waste supply chains, and more consumer choice for healthy diets. Intensification of agricultural production must be accompanied by concerted action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture to avoid further acceleration of climate change and avert threats to the long-term viability of global agriculture. Making these changes, although technically feasible, requires urgent, collective and substantially increased action internationally, nationally, locally and individually.
