Key Welfare Indicators for Poultry Production
The research aimed to identify measurable indicators of poutry welfare and distinguish between "lead" and "lag" indicators to show performance during the growing cycle. "Lead" indicators provide the opportunity for remedial action for immediate improvement.

The study examined indicators such as stocking density, mortality, leg health, factory rejections, air and litter quality, water quality and consumption. It showed the multi-factorial nature of the many issues and recommended that the poultry industry focus more on the lead indicators identified and suggested a development programme with special emphasis on water quality and consumption.
