In the UK fresh water will be scarcer. More crops will fall into irrigation need. Agriculture must find ways of increasing the ability of soils to retain moisture and to give it up to plant roots; develop more water efficient plants and which can tolerate lower quality; apply water more accurately and efficiently; reduce the energy and other resource requirements of irrigation and reduce diffuse pollution impacts of irrigation. There is considerable cross-sector response to meeting these challenges.
