The influence of chassis design and operating conditions on tractor performance
TN012 - A review of tractor chassis design, including the concept of lead ratio and the effects of scrock and wind-up on the transmission. Includes simple guidelines on how to minimise wind-up.
Year of Publication2009
One of a series of notes produced by Harper Adams University College, this leaflet reviews tractor chassis design and evolution and outlines a research project underway at Harper to understand Torque and Power distribution in real operating conditions. The note defines the concept of lead ratio and the effects of scrock and wind-up on the transmission. The effect of soil mechanics and load on these phenomena is discussed. Practical guidelines on how to minimise wind-up by managing tyre conditions and wear are provided. Finally, an overview is given of the HAUC research project to measure actual torque and power of a working tractor using ABB Torductors in the engine and gearbox.
