Recognising that many students benefit from learning by doing things (a process known as active experimentation), Harper Adams University College has developed an experiential learning package that puts mathematical mechanics and engineering design into practice. It is based around the engaging theme of a medieval weapon known as a trebuchet. Sections covered are the challenges of teaching engineering, interactive learning at Harper Adams, the use of trebuchet to demonstrate engineering in action, designing and constructing the trebuchet, a weapon of maths instruction and first use and further development.
