1330: Ecosystems - economics
This paper summarises the sixth of the key questions addressed by the National Ecosystem Assessment ‘Why should we incorporate the economic values of ecosystem services into decision making?’ It is taken from the ‘Synthesis of Key Findings’
Year of Publication2011
The values of most ecosystem services are currently omitted from national economic frameworks and local decision making. However, a conceptual framework is now available to account for most of their market values and some of their non-market values. Failure to include the valuation of non-market values in decision making results in a less efficient resource allocation; however, a major challenge is to develop systems to capture the values of non-market ecosystem services.
