1213: Future of food and farming
This paper is taken from the executive summary of the report of the Foresight project, ‘The Future of Food and Farming: Challenges and choices for global sustainability’ published by the Government Office for Science
Year of Publication2011
The challenges facing us will require solutions at the limits of human ingenuity. Key priorities for action are to spread best practice, invest in new knowledge, make sustainable food production central in development, assume that there is little new land for agriculture, ensure long-term sustainability of fish stocks, promote sustainable intensification, include the environment in food system economics, reduce waste, improve the evidence base and develop metrics to assess progress, anticipate major issues with water availability for food production, work to change consumption patterns and empower citizens. Decisive action over a wide front is needed now.
