Optimise oilseed rape canopy to maximise yield
An account of the ways in which oilseed rape canopies can be manipulated to maximise yield.
Year of Publication2011
Maximum yield of rape is achieved with a green-leaf area index (GAI) of about 3.5. To maximise yield the canopy must be limited to the optimum GAI by a range of management techniques that include establishment methods, seed rates, fertiliser use, growth regulators and spring defoliation. In future, the problem may be alleviated through the use of semi-dwarf and apetalous varieties and the use of alkaline sprays.
